Career Summary

Steve began work in1986 in Namibia on the west coast diamond fields as a metallurgist; He spent several years in production positions at a range of operations for De Beers, including alluvial, open pit and underground operations throughout southern Africa. This experience served to identify the ubiquitous need for improved understanding of the interaction between variable and uncertain resources and the recovery efficiency of process plant (which is also variable and uncertain).

This interest led to a position in Anglo American’s Minred department to improve the interaction between metallurgical plant design and operation teams and the Diamond resource and reserve estimation/evaluation teams.

Steve’s work in Minred lead to him establishing and developing a new arm of Minred (Metred) that has been responsible for the development of a diamond value management system that was implemented across De Beers’ operations and bulk sampling facilities.

Prior to joining QG in 2008, Steve based in the UK in the research arm of the De Beers Mineral Resource Evaluation team where he headed up the Metallurgical Recovery Factor Research project which focussed on developing tools and techniques to quantify the impact that recovery uncertainty has on overall project value.

He holds a NHD in extractive metallurgy, a B.Comm from the University of South Africa and an MBA from Witswatersrand University. He is currently completing a PhD in geostatisics and geometallurgy at Adelaide University under the supervision of Prof Peter. Dowd.
